Built in the DMV: Meet Nigel Martin of NigelBuilds

I started NigelBuilds in early 2026 because I kept watching good DMV businesses drown in work that software should be handling. Owners who are excellent at the thing they actually do, acupuncture, aesthetics, home services, were spending their evenings returning calls, chasing no-shows, and typing the same follow-up email for the hundredth time. That gap between how hard they work and how little of it their tools carry is the whole reason this company exists.

My background is security operations. Overnight shifts teach you a specific way of thinking. You build the system before the incident, you assume things fail at 3 a.m. when nobody is watching, and you write everything down so the next person does not have to rediscover it. I ran on that rhythm for years, studying automation in the quiet hours between rounds. When I finally built my first booking system for a real business, it did not feel like a career change. It felt like the same job with a better toolset. Watch the perimeter, catch what everyone else misses, never let a handoff drop.

Every missed call is a person who was ready to say yes and got silence instead.

NigelBuilds builds custom AI automations for service-based and local businesses. In plain terms, I build the front office that never sleeps. Missed-call handling, web and social inquiry replies, routine booking and follow up. I also consult for owners who want the systems designed around how their practice actually runs, not around how a software vendor imagines it runs.

The work I am proudest of so far is with Healing Acupuncture and Wellness, Dr. Jennifer Yen's practice. She runs two locations, and her front desk used to end when the humans went home. Now her booking runs 24/7 across both locations, and she did it without hiring anyone new. Patients book while the clinic is closed and the schedule is already right when the team walks in the next morning. That is the transformation I care about. Not a dashboard, not a buzzword. A practice that captures the demand it already earns.

The goal is never to replace the front desk. It is to give the front desk a night shift that never gets tired.

The DMV is a strange and wonderful market. It is dense with independent practices run by people who came here from everywhere, and most of them are competing against private-equity chains with ten times the software budget. I grew up around here. I want the independent operators to win. That is why the work stays local and why I keep the focus on appointment-driven practices, the businesses where one unanswered phone call is real money and a real person who needed help.

Earlier this year VoyageMaryland featured me in their Hidden Gems series, and the experience of being on the other side of the interview is actually what convinced me to start Built in the DMV. Being asked good questions about your own story is clarifying. Owners deserve that, and the region deserves a record of the people building it. So this series does for other owners what that feature did for me: a real story, professionally told, with photos and a link back to the business, at no cost.

If you run an independent business in the DMV, this series is for you. I am not looking for the biggest companies. I am looking for the ones built with care by someone who shows up every day. The ones a customer walks out of thinking, how is this place not famous yet.

Software should carry the boring weight so the owner can do the thing they are actually great at.

That is the whole thesis, and I get to prove it one DMV business at a time.
